The Bible And Books Album

   Martha Coates Bible

Martha Coates Bible shown below was given to my grandmother Myrtle Gracie Coates by her grandfather James Coates about 1902. Sr. James was born in Grainger County, Tennessee in 1829 and died in 1906. Claude, her son/ my father, inherited it.  I have darkened the page lettering because the writing is very faded. The cross, anchor and wreath are inked by hand.

It reads Martha Coates daughter of Louis (sp) Coates (sp) and Partheny Hindes (sp) Born the 26th Oct 1840
Married the 25? The rest is not legible.
Later I found the 5 was in fact an 0. Lewis and Parthena were married on October 20, 1827 in Grainger County, Tennessee. Parthena was the daughter of James Hines and Sarah Paschell. I still have not found the parents of Lewis.

This little card was used for a page marker in the large Coates family
Bible in my possession. The Bible is brittle and too large to scan.

My dear little friend, though small you be, remember Jesus died for thee.

    Captain Julian's Bible

My great grandmother's pencil  writing is found on a back leaf of this New Testament Bible that belonged to Evan C. Julian, also the name Barbara Bigham and my great grandmother's nickname Mrs. Licci Coates.  Small pieces of rice paper mark "The First Epistle General of John" and "Hebrews VI -Vll" and "Romans IX".   The clasp and edges are brass and the cover is leather.
Hannah Julian, sister to Evan, married William Bigham in 1848 in Ohio and later moved to Terrell, Texas.

  Barbara Bigham's Storybook

This storybook was given to Barbara Bigham by her father William Bigham. As you can see it is  in poor condition. The first seventeen pages are missing. On the back cover is a verse and Barbara's name. The verse in the back reads: In the quiet of the early morning we should laden our hearts with kindness and good will find us during the day. This writing is not in Barbara's hand.
The inscription at the front reads:
Barbara A. Bigham, Presented her by her  (P) father Mr. Wm Bigham As a Ke (probably keepsake)

National Standard Elementary Spelling Book

This was the new revised edition of the National Standard Elementary Spelling Book, (C) 1866. It was owned and used by Sarah Feliccia Bigham.  I have included the example in the book considered perfect penmanship of that time on page 16 of the book which has helped me many times in reading older documents.
