Bibles And Books Page Two

  Smith's English Grammar

On the inside cover,  'E Barbara Bigham's Book' is written twice at the top and in the middle of the page is written  'Elisabeth Bigham'. Elisabeth was born in Illinois 1867. The book is in poor condition with missing pages. I have not found a printing date.

Christian Hymns

To establish a time line for the Coates family and the books printing, I searched out the one name on the cover to be E.G. Sewell. I found he compiled this book in 1889 and it sold for .25 cents. With that I assume this book  belonged to James and Artelia Coates when they lived in Kentucky, before coming to Texas.

Below was taken from   http://www.piney.com/ChofChristName.html which tells
more about E.G. Sewell and his opinion to allow organ music to be a part of worship.

"The supporters of the missionary society organized the Tennessee State Missionary Convention on October 6, 1890, with one purpose in mind, as stated by J. H. Garrison. He said at that time: “We will take Tennessee for organized mission work...within five years." A. I. Myhr was dispatched to Tennessee to head the new state society despite the protestation of David Lipscomb that Tennessee was not a destitute mission territory. Myhr and his supporters moved resolutely ahead to accomplish their mission.
"Their efforts met with some success and the intent was clear. Myhr was aggressive and abrasive in his operations. His actions were of such a nature, in promoting the missionary society, that he came under the direct attack of E. G. Sewell and David Lipscomb. And as later events proved, Myhr was no match for Lipscomb and the Gospel Advocate. Of course, division was brought about by men trying to move churches out of the South's atmosphere and into the Christian Church and Disciples of Christ, which had already organized itself into a Sectarian Society. Of course, when you organize, those who refuse to join are defacto put out of fellowship:
"As early as 1882, Sewell and Harding were urging that a separation be brought about to identify that part of the Christian Church fellowship which supported the organ and the society. Lipscomb, at the time, rebuffed his brethren who called for such division. He sought no compromise, but hoped that the church would not suffer division."
"By 1897, Lipscomb was reconciled to the fact that division had already occurred and the supporters of the innovations would be satisfied with nothing less than a complete take-over of the churches... (Adron Doran, J.E.Choate, The Christian Scholar, p. 59

Harvest Bells No. 2

A new collection of religious songs for Sabbath schools and revival meetings

This book belonged to J. D. 'Jim' Coates. His name is printed inside the cover. The corner of page 92 has been turned down and the song there is 'Bright Land' with a news clipping of a poem by Rev. Frederick Langbridge, A English poet and religious writer (1849-1923) I have looked for this on the web and found most people only quote the third verse and probably have never read the entire poem.
