The humble penny postcard is an item of some historical importance. Picture post cards were made of landscapes and cityscapes as well as important buildings, streets, and memorials across the country. The image of late 19th century, but more early 20th century America was captured on the penny postcard. Various scenes of life were preserved in color from virtually every city, town, and village across America. The souvenir post card preserved the outward appearance of American towns and cities. The snapshot photographically printed as postcards preserved the more personal lives of Americans. And then there were the greeting post cards, which often had children and adults in fancy dress, as many wanted to imagine themselves dressing, or how they would have liked to dress their children. Many of these photo's are on humble penny postcards. The postmark tells what range of years they were printed. The cards on this page range from 1904 to 1918 and have been a great help in finding my Coates, Bigham and Rose families history's in Texas.
The only photo I have of my grandmother Myrtle Gracie Coates is a 1x1 inch picture that my father carried in his wallet for many years. I have enlarged and restored as if it were new. Recently, I was talking with my second cousin Ruby Coates Henson. She told me that Sarah Fellicia Bigham Coates our great-grandmother had herself, taken all of the small photos like Gracie’s. There weren’t too many women in that time that did photography, much less have the time or inclination to try it. That made me smile.

Mae Coates Before and After I am not sure where Mae fits in our genealogy. This small photo was in the family trunk. There is a Cora Mae Young that was married to Grady Leon Coates b. 1909-1985, but I have no proof that this photo is of her. Any information would be very much appreciated Email Louise |
