John Wischard was Sheriff of the Mearns in Kincardineshire, 1214-49. His grandson Robert Wishart, Bishop of Glasgow fought with Wallace and Bruce, and was appointed a Guardian of Scotland. George Wishart, the Protestant martyr, was burnt at the stake in St. Andrews, in 1546. The name is Norman-French, from Guiscard meaning "cunning".
