Letter to Mrs. Reuben Case From Commanding Officer, Ed. S. Nash, Co. G, 1st Kansas Vols.
Moscow, Tenn, December 31st, 1862
Mrs. Reuben Case
Leavenworth, Kansas
My Dear Madam,
It becomes my painful duty to communicate to you the mournful intelligence of
the death of your hustand, Reuben Case of my Company (G) 1st Kansas Vols.
He was killed yesterday, under the folowing circumstances: He has for some
time past been employed - at his own request - as a teamster, and has been
driving one of the "Brigade Staff" wagons. Yesterday, after "chaining " his
wagon down a hill he attempted to get on the saddle mule while the team was
in motion and fell under the wheels. The wheels passed over the middle of
his body, and he died in a few moments without speaking, and apparently
unconscious of pain. Today he was buried with military honors by his late
comrades. I have had an inventory of his effects made as follows: Cash -
$11.55, - 3 Blankets - 2 Shirts - 1 Pr. Pants, 1 Pr. Drawers, - 2 Pr. Socks,
- 1 Pr. Boots - 1 Revolver & 1 . Daguerreotype, - I have just had the
property (except the Revolver and the daguerreotype) sold at auction. The
blankets were sold for $7.00-Pants $1.00, Boots, $ 3.75. Drawers, Socks and
Shirts >75, Total $12.50. - These things wee sold on credit til pay day. I
will collect it and send with the $11.55 - Total $24.05 - to you at the first
opportunity I have to send it safely. If you desire and are willing to risk
it I will send it to you by mail, as soon as I receive your order to do so.
The Revolver and picture I will keep and send to you at the first opportunity
- or if you prefer, and so direct I will sell the revolver for you.
Your husband had pay due from July 1st, 1862, amounting to $78.00 and a
balance of clothing money due him $12.37, In all $90.37 - He has also some
extry duty money due him from the Qm Dept. - amounting probably to some
twenty or thirty dollars. I will look to this and have the proper vouchers
made so that you may get the money - In addition to this you are entitled to
a bounty of $100. and a pension of $8.00 per month during your widowhood.
Enclosed you will find a lock of his hair which I thought would be comforting
to you to receive. Believe me Madam it is a painful task for me to convey to
you such unwelcome tidings, and that I shall esteem it a pleasure - as well
as a duty - to assist you in the proper settlement of his afairs.
Very Respectfully,
Your Obt Svt,
Ed. S. Nash
Capt. Co. G, 1st. Kan. Vols.
