Widow's Pension
Sarah Jane Fortner Johnson
For Husband
William Johnson

Overview of Pension papers received June 15, 2001 by Louise Johnson kohl from the National Archives.

It includes every document on file for William. (87 pages) It also includes statements of clerks for the license and marriage of Sarah and William in Claiborne County, TN. She definitely spelled her last name 'Fortner'

It seems that Sarah applied in 1864 and was granted a sum of $8.00 plus $2.00 a month for minor children which included, Solomon, b. August 07, 1853, Margaret S. b. July 14, 1855 and Isaac B. b. November 17, 1856. That application was denied March 1869 and it apparently took five years to have it re-instated in 1871. The reason being there was a discrepancy about the death date for William. According to the service record and statements from witnesses. One reads April 1862, one reads April 3, 1862, one reads April 30, 1862 and one reads between May 8 and 10, 1862.

Widow Pension Papers

The government settled on the April 30, 1862 date, but I am inclined to stay with the May 8 to 10th date, because of witness statements who were in actual attendance, at the time of Williams death.

The file reveals that on Sarah's first application, she had mistaken the ages of the children but through affidavits of midwives and family, Sarah was able to correct her statement. The end result was agreed upon, that the correct birth dates for the children are the ones above. Also note that Margaret's middle initial was S. I will take license assuming that  she was named after her mother, since no other child carried her name.

Apparently William was in good health when he enlisted, according to Capt. Vincent Meyers: While under the command of Col. Byrd, the 2nd Regiment went on a raid from Cumberland Ford or Flat Lick, Kentucky to Big Creek Gap Tennessee to attack a company of Rebel Cavalry who was encamped on the south side of Big Creek Gap. They attacked and captured a great many of them. He also states that the exposure while on duty caused William's disease. While on the raid, the Army waded through creeks waist deep and was on forced marches and became over heated. William and a great many others became sick after they returned to camp. William was a scout on that raid.

Note: Pineville, the seat of Bell County, is located on the Cumberland River where it cuts through Pine Mountain. It was settled in 1781 as Cumberland Ford and a post office by that name opened in 1818. The name Pineville was also in use at an early time and was used when the town was laid out as the seat of the new county in 1867. The post office was renamed in 1870. The population in 1990 was 2,198.

NOTES:

The 1850 census appears to be correct for their ages comparing the sibling's ages listed still living with Sarah's parents in the 1850 Green Co., TN census.

I believe William was actually 45 years of age on the 1860 census and Sarah was 35 or 36 depending on what month the census was taken and because of the 1870 census. Sarah is found living with her son Isaac Barton and wife Caroline on the 1880 census. The age is still close by two years. If I am correct, then William would have been born in 1815.

Claiborne Co. census:

Johnson, William ,35,m, Farmer,TN (1850 census)
Johnson, Sarah, 25

Johnson, William, 40, M, W, Farm Laborer. TN (1860 census)
Johnson, Sarah, 26 (Probably was 36)

Johnson, Sarah, 47, (1870 census)
Johnson, Sarah, 55, (1880 census
